My neighbor’s dog barks constantly. What can I do?
Excessive barking that causes a disturbance can be reported to the bylaw officer. The dog owner may be subject to enforcement under the Animal Control By-Law if the issue continues.
There are cats roaming in my yard and leaving a mess. Can anything be done?
Yes. Cats must be kept on their owner’s property and not allowed to roam freely. You can report nuisance cats (e.g. defecating on lawns, damaging property) to the City. Offences may result in a fine to the owner or impoundment.
Can I have chickens or other livestock in my backyard?
No. Livestock—including chickens, goats, pigs, and cows—are not permitted within city limits.
Are there leash laws in Winkler?
Yes. Dogs must be on a leash or under immediate control when off their owner’sproperty. Allowing a dog to roam is a by-law violation.
Is there a limit to how many pets I can own?
Yes. Each property is limited to owning 2 dogs and 2 cats.
